resulting in a number of grim robberies that made it into the press:

It's something to do with visual interest being created by forcing your eyes to move around the room/space/ring/thing

The hallmarks at the back are from the Chester assay office - year 1913 - and there's also an interesting swirled maker's mark

One stone has possibly been replaced

The two crests are rendered in fine enamel, and such 19th century examples connected to the historic institution of learning are fabulously rare.
