I have also seen Germans wearing captured pairs of these (see last photo)

It is in fairly good condition but worn

I have seen these socks sold as original WWII many times before

I imagine this was more like a cheese bread stick or cracker like thing

This style was used for various Wehrmacht equipment, and I even have one in my collection with a WH license plate number on it. This one seems to have a gray military color hiding under the brown paint. The color reminds me of a lot of pre war WWI equipment, that lighter gray color. A handy and difficult to find piece in usable condition.
